Kunstgeschichte Podcast (in Englisch) Nr. 17: Provinciality in Art

The newest „Dr Great Art“ podcast. „Episode 17: Provinciality in Art.“ Times have changed drastically. Now, what provinciality is has been turned completely around. It is a state of mind, not geography.

Kunstgeschichte Nr 16 (in Englisch): Postmodernism Exists!

The newest Dr Great Art artecdote, Episode 16, concerns the beginning of the period, or transitional subperiod, of art in which we now exist: Postmodernism. It cannot be talked away or ignored, nor should it be worshipped. But we are in it since 1979. It is a transitional period, true, but it is here. How it began and what it is so far.

Kunstgeschichte Podcast Nr. 15 (in Englisch): Paradigms and Fuzzy Categories — and Art

My newest podcast! Episode 15: Paradigms and Fuzzy Categories.
This Dr Great Art artecdote is about a form of definitional conceptualization, paradigms and fuzzy categories, and how that is important to understanding art. http://drgreatart.libsyn.com/episode-15-paradigms-and-fuzzy-categories #arthistory #philosophy #art

Kunstgeschichte Podcast Nr. 13, in Englisch: „The Nine Arts and the Nine Muses“

Dr Great Art Episode 13: Nine Arts and Nine Muses
There are traditionally Nine Muses and Nine Arts, frequently linked to one another. This is my attempt to concoct a fresh, contemporary version of this system for no darn reason other than pure, cultural fun.

Frohe Ostern !

Happy Easter! The image is part of Giotto’s fresco in Assisi, the ‚Noli me tangere‘ image („Don’t touch me (yet).“) Remember that Jesus, upon resurrection appeared first to Mary Magdalen. Even in the Bible Peter (sexistically) comments on how Jesus couldn’t have chosen a WOMAN first, and yet he did. My favorite holiday as it is so deeply syncretist. (Which I think will be the theme of my next Dr Great Art podcast.)

Kunstgeschichte Podcast Nr. 10: „Why Art History?“ In English.

The newest podcast episode (Nr. 10)! Dr Great Art: „Why Art History!“ What are the lessons art history can teach us? The lessons of art history are that they are lessons. That is a tautology, but an illuminating one worth elaborating upon. It is necessary to know history as personal empowerment for artists: to test the present with the often surprising facts of the past, to note how and why „official“ history has often changed; second, to discover one’s own personal, vital ancestry; and finally, in order to criticize and change art history.
